Enda Kenny Grins For The Gintry – But Can He Stop A Referendum on the new EU Fiscal Treaty?

Enda Kenny was one of the courtly mummers in the presence of her britannic majesty in 2011 – good practice for 2012!

UPDATE :

Enda told Nicolas he would stop an Irish Referendum on the new European Union fiscal treaty – has the Taoiseach broken another promise?

The ruling class discreetly applauds the Fine Gael leader’s broken promises to the little people – such as when he went back on a pre-election pledge to stop the closure of Roscommon Hospital.

But Enda won’t get any ear-grabs for letting down the big people – a much more serious mistake!

Article 27 and the Independent TDs

A group of Independent TDs who want Europe’s new fiscal treaty put to a referendum will seek to use a little known constitutional provision to petition the President to do so, it has emerged.
Under Article 27 of the Constitution, a Bill can be referred to a referendum if requested by at least one third of the Dáil, and a majority of the Seanad.
Donegal South West TD Thomas Pringle said he was “hopeful of achieving that requirement.”

United Left Alliance TD’s, part of the Dáil Technical Group – Irish Times Review

leave a comment »

For a change, the Irish Times report is fair to the left-wing outsiders.

Debate occurred on this site after the February 25 2011 General Election on whether Luke “Ming” Flanagan could be grouped within the left – we presume that argument is over now.  Ming has sided with the United Left Alliance comrades on a variety of key issues since his election in Roscommon-South Leitrim – is the west awake for the left?

https://tomasoflatharta.com/2011/03/15/labour-voters-how-cool-are-they-about-coalition-with-the-right/#comments

The article is discussed on the Cedar Lounge Revolution Site :

Ming Flanagan gets this mention: we are told the Independent TD for Roscommon-South Leitrim who has in the past proudly advertised his fondness for the odd cannabis joint

orbits in this area, but is less clearly explicitly left-wing and therefore perhaps more sensibly regarded as being a sometime fellow traveller on some but not all issues.

Was Liam Cosgrave’s 1973-77 Fine Gael-Labour Coalition the worst-ever Dublin Government?

with one comment

On many occasions Gene Kerrigan has argued that the Bertie Ahern coalition elected in 2002 was the worst-ever Dublin Government.

Back in January 2006, this column argued in some detail that the then government, headed by Bertie Ahern, was the worst in the history of the State

Surely the Liam Cosgrave-led 1973-77 Coalition deserves this honour

Austerity Is Not Working: Tax The Rich, Invest In Jobs

Next weeks budget will see further drastic cuts in the living standards of workers, the unemployed and the poor. Since the onset of the crisis in 2008 government policy has focused on bailing out banks and speculators and making the working class pick up the bill. Hardly a cent has been taken from those who have the real wealth in society.  The effect of this policy has been lengthening dole queues and impoverishment with rising inequality in a society that was already deeply unequal.  The wealth of the super-rich has increased throughout the crises.
