US Police Investigators in Utah claim killer of high -profile Trump activist Charlie Kirk was Tyler Robinson – What Do We Know about Robinson’s political beliefs and his possible motives?
In the age of the internet as information travels and changes with lightning speed, some very old journalistic values remain necessary – be sure of your hard facts before publishing anything – and if you make a mistake, correct it immediately – especially dealing with a story like this.
Tyler Robinson is in custody and the evidence against him looks very strong. He remains innocent until he is convicted, and is entitled to a fair trial. It remains to be seen if that happens.
Reliable sources state that his father turned him in after seeing photographs of the alleged assassin, who fired one successful shot at Charlie Kirk, who was answering a question about gun control at a public rally staged on a university campus.
USA President Donald Trump is using this event to target opponents to his left.
But, was Tyler Robinson motivated by left-wing or progressive ideas?
More and more evidence suggests the exact opposite.
Here, for example, is the direct testimony of Robinson’s grandmother, and the source is a right-wing British tabloid, the Daily Mail :

Tyler Robinson’s family background is white, ultra-conservative, pro-Trump and gun-obsessed; Amber Jones Robinson is the mother of Tyler Robinson :
Matt Robinson, Tyler’s father, turned him over to the state authorities – in a state where the death penalty is legal – and when many political commentators of the USA far-right have called for a convicted killer of Charlie Kirk to be executed – all the family members must be extremely traumatised.
Many people will ask a legitimate question : why would a young American man from an ultra-conservative background be motivated to kill a high-level co-thinker like Charlie Kirk?
Answers may begin to emerge from examination of far-right extremist statements, which are the exact opposite of the truth, and are wild conspiracy nonsense.
A public statements issued by Trumpist conspiracy loyalist Laura Loomer denounced Charlie Kirk, :

Some correspondents claim Tyler Robinson subscribed to Loomer’s X site.
In Ireland, WorldByStorm writes a fine summary in the Cedar Lounge Blog on this incident, and the threat of similar events happening in Ireland. Police are investigating serious far-right threats against the Tánaiste (Deputy Prime Minister) and Foreign Affairs minister Simon Harris, the leader of the Fine Gael party. Harris worries about “silence” :
It’s understandable that the Tánaiste would feel particularly raw after a number of weeks where he and his family have been the target of threats of violence and it is good to see that this is being taken seriously by An Garda Siochana. As the Independent notes he’s not the only one, and politicians have been subject to assault.
Mr O’Gorman was assaulted on a doorstep last year while canvassing for the general election and the Green Party chair, Cllr Janet Horner, was attacked while putting up posters for the local elections in summer of 2024.
However I wonder about the idea of ‘silence’. For a start who are those who are remaining silent? Almost as one there’s been expressions of condemnation in the US about what is obviously a personal tragedy for Kirk and his family, whatever the contents of his beliefs.
Moving further afield, is there a necessity for Irish politicians and public figures to express condemnation? I’d imagine most Irish people, even quite a number of those who were particularly interested in politics, weren’t very much aware of Kirk. It’s important to note that online and on the hard and far right that knowledge would be greater (I was struck by a friend saying how a cousin of theirs was a follower of Kirk’s). I knew of him and Turning Point USA but I’d largely categorised him with the Fuentes and Shapiro’s of this world. That might be to do him a certain sort of injustice, Kirk was an operator and able to navigate between some in traditional conservatism and some on the wilder shores, as it were. But that’s the thing, Kirk was a celebrity of sorts, not a politician. He had built his own personal brand on baiting contrarianism of the usual right/hard right variety – and a reputation as an intellectual titan of the US hard right by also baiting third level students in contexts where the odds were stacked in his favour (which actually says as much about those who reified him as it does about him).
Far-Right activists have also targeted the People Before Profit TD for Dublin South-West Paul Murphy, his partner Jess Spear, and their small child.
Here is another excellent post examining the facts rationally, linking it to British mainstream media coverage; The author is David Renton who writes the Lives Running Blog.
The Yankee state is controlled by dangerous far-right actors led by the convicted rapist Donald Trump. Solidarity with all left-wing, progressive, anti-imperialist, feminist, human rights, pro-immigrant and trade unionist activists on the American continent.
News spread in Ireland within the last 24 hours that a golf course owned by Trump in Doonbeg County Clare will host two major tournaments in September 2026 – the Walker Cup and the Irish Open. A campaign should begin to ensure these nauseating events do not occur. There are many other suitable golf courses in Ireland.
