Ireland Fought for Freedom against an Empire – Now we on the Irish Left Support Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom

We are a group of trade unionists, socialists and anarchists who want to express our full support to you and help you organise to obtain all your rights while you are in Ireland.

We are utterly opposed to the Russian invasion of your country and do not believe there is any excuse for the savagery, destruction and death that had been brought to your country. Putin is not trying to remove fascism: he is one of the biggest supporters of the far right. It seems obvious to us that you face Russian imperialism and that Putin is trying to expand the territory under Russian control.

For us, your situation is like that which Ireland faced a hundred years ago, when we had to fight to escape from the British Empire. While we welcome every refugee to Ireland and we have particular solidarity for our fellow workers. Irish trade unions and Ukrainian trade unions already had many links before the war and we hope to strengthen these by learning more about your experiences and your needs today.

Ireland has a conservative, pro-market government and this means workers have to organise to win decent wages. The government here is highly networked among landlords and international property investors, and they have created a terrible housing crisis. There are trade unions and community groups that challenge the employers and the landlords and if you need their support, we will help you find the right ones.

Hopefully, Ukraine will resist the invasion and expel the invader. But then there will be a period of rebuilding and we can already see signs of multinationals looking to take advantage of your crisis to exploit the country after the war. This is why we are demanding all Ukraine’s debts be cancelled. You will need a big public programme of housing and health care that should not be done for profit but for need. We also support trade unionists and socialists in Ukraine who are opposing attempts to use the war for proposed new labour laws which weaken workers’ rights.

Whilst we continue to support Irish Military Neutrality, we understand that Ukrainians must obtain weapons from any source, just as Ireland received weapons from Germany when we fought for independence from the British Empire.

We say neither Moscow nor Washington and believe only the Ukrainian people themselves should decide how best to achieve security, safety, justice and freedom.

Ми, група профспілкових діячів, соціалістів і анархістів, хочемо висловити
повну підтримку та допомогу в забезпеченні дотримання всіх ваших прав під час перебування в Ірландії.
Ми категорично проти російського вторгнення у вашу країну і не віримо в будь-яке виправдання дикості, руйнації та смерті, до яких було доведено вашу країну. Путін не намагається здолати фашизм: він один із найбільших покровителів ультраправих. Нам очевидно, що ви потерпаєте від російського імперіалізму і що Путін намагається розширити територію під контролем Росії.
Ваша ситуація схожа на ту, з якою зіштовхнулася Ірландія 100 років тому, коли нам довелося боротися, щоб вирватися з Британської імперії.
Ми вітаємо кожного біженця в Ірландії і особливо солідарні з нашими побратимами з числа простих працівників. Ірландські та українські профспілки вже мали багато зв’язків
до війни, і ми сподіваємося зміцнити їх, дізнавшись більше про ваш досвід і ваші потреби сьогодні.
В Ірландії консервативний, проринковий уряд, а це означає, що робітники повинні згуртуватися, щоб отримати гідну заробітну плату. Уряд тісно пов’язаний з інтересами орендодавців та міжнародних інвесторів у нерухомість, а це веде до жахливої житлової кризи. Є профспілки та громадські рухів, які кидають виклик роботодавцям і орендодавцям, і якщо вам потрібна їх підтримка, ми допоможемо вам її отримати.
Сподіваюся, Україна встоїть перед навалою і вижене загарбника. Але потім настане період відновлення, і ми вже бачимо ознаки того, що транснаціональні корпорації прагнуть скористатися кризою, щоб експлуатувати країну після війни. Ось чому ми вимагаємо скасувати всі зовнішні борги України. Вам знадобиться всебічна програма розвитку житла та охорони здоров’я, які повинні функціонувати не заради прибутку, а заради потреби. Крім того, ми підтримуємо профспілковців і соціалістів в Україні, які протистоять спробам використовувати війну для запропонованих нових трудових законів, які обмежують права працівників.
Хоча ми продовжуємо підтримувати ірландський військовий нейтралітет, ми розуміємо, що українці повинні отримувати зброю з будь-якого джерела, так само, як Ірландія отримувала зброю від Німеччини, коли ми боролися за незалежність від Британської імперії.
Ми заявляємо: “Ані Москви, ані Вашингтону”, і вважаємо, що лише український народ має вирішити, як найкраще досягти безпеки, захисту, справедливості та свободи.

допомогти досягти вільної України та поглибити зв’язки між ірландським та українським робітництвом.
