General Election Challenge of United Left Alliance Strengthens

with 7 comments

This is a very useful news summary published on the Socialist Party Site.

If any readers attended the Cork ULA meeting this week, please consider mailing a news report for this site.  We hear the event was very well attended – one comment mentioned a crowd of over 200 – exaggeration or truth?

  1. A couple of people who were there said that there was well over 200 at the Cork launch. And that 140 of them signed up to help with the Cork campaigns.

By the way, “irritant”! The cheek of you!

  3. James McBarron’s excellent report of the Cork ULA Launch Meeting is here :

Some readers might be surprised about the positive tone coming from an anarchist angle.

The abortion issue was raised, just like at the Dublin launch. Many ULA supporters are concerned about this issue – and they are right!

    • I very much doubt if there’s much to be concerned about.

The ULA will take a pro-choice position, in line with those of its affiliates, as soon as there’s a policy making conference.

For the record, here’s the Socialist Party policy on abortion, which all Socialist Party candidates will be standing on: “The Socialist Party stands for the provision of free safe abortion through the health service for those women who choose to have one.”

  5. Thanks to Michael O’Brien for this quite astonishing report, over in the Cedar Lounge, of some recent local ULA launches :

I was at the Carlow, Kilkenny and Wexford launches. Don’t have time to give a full report (which hopefully others can give) so briefly there were 200 plus in Cork. 50 in Carlow, 55 in Kilkenny, 50 in Wexford and 62 in Dublin West.

An average of two thirds at each are signing up to the ULA, most of whom are not members of the pre-existing organisations.

So a promising start. A number of the meetings are being brought forward because of the earlier than expected election. Details will follow.
